Robert Lewandowski has already bagged 18 goals in 12 appearances across competitions this season and is on the verge of breaking Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s record of scoring in the first eight Bundesliga matches of the season if he scores this weekend against Union Berlin. Of the 18 goals Lewandowski has scored this season, 12 of them have come in the league and he’s at the top of the table in the race for the Torjägerkanone. If he wins it, it will be his third in a row. Lewandowski also recently became the 5th-highest goal scorer in Champions League history with his brace against Olympiacos.

In a recent interview with AZ, Bayern Munich legend Giovane Elber said he truly feels that Lewandowski can reach the 40 goal tally in the league this season. A striker like Lewandowski, Elber said, hasn’t come around since the days of legendary striker Gerd Müller. When he was asked whether the Polish international was the best striker in the world:
With certainty. Sure, there are other good strikers in the Bundesliga and abroad, but Lewandowski scores a goal or provides an assist in almost every game. He is in very good form. It’s really crazy. I have never seen anything like it at Bayern. That hasn’t happened since Gerd Müller.
A striker himself during his playing days, Elber was asked if he feels Lewandowski’s talents are better than his in his prime at Bayern:
Much, much better! I saw him already in the preseason in America. The way he came back from vacation was insane. I could only dream of that earlier after vacation. But today, the players think differently. They do a lot for themselves even on vacation. He works and lives very professionally.
The current record for goals scored in a single Bundesliga season is still held by Gerd Müller, who achieved the feat of 40 goals in the 1971/1972 season with Bayern. Lewandowski has already grabbed 12 league goals from only 8 matches, so he’s on pace to equal or break it. Elber has confidence that he can do it:
I thought that no one would ever manage to break that record. But now I think that Lewandowski can do it. He scores one or two goals every game. My highest respect!
This just about sums up Lewy’s form right now:
