According to Bild, Manuel Neuer wants to extend his contract with Bayern Munich for at least two more years. Neuer’s contract is set to end in 2021 so this contract extension would see that Bayern Munich’s number one goalkeeper will stay until 2023.
Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nübel has also been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich. When asked whether Nübel could be Neuer’s successor, Neuer said that, “He might, yes. The signs look very good for him.” With Nübel’s contract set to expire in 2020 Bayern Munich could possibly sign the promising German goalkeeper on a free this summer.
That raises the interesting possibility that both he and Neuer would be on the team simultaneously. It would be a delicate situation in light of Neuer’s seniority and captaincy and Nübel’s ambitions.
Nübel has reportedly rejected a contract extension with Schalke as well as moves to RB Leipzig, Manchester United, and PSG. In addition to starting for Schalke, Nübel has been the Germany U-21 starting goalkeeper for the U-21 World Cup last summer where they reached the final.
