UPDATE: Niklas Süle has torn meniscus in addition to ACL; Hoeness insists he will miss Euro 2020 for Germany

The Bayern boss doesn’t expect Süle to be ready after his season-ending ACL injury, and he is apparently right: it was found that Süle had also damaged his meniscus in addition to a torn ACL.

As most of you probably know, this Saturday Niklas Süle tore the the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of his left knee. Süle will be out for many months, missing the rest of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns. Some think that the German center-back will have to miss Euro 2020 as well.

Bayern Munich President, Uli Hoeness, rejected any idea of Niklas Süle playing in this year’s European Cup, let alone the rest of the current Bundesliga season. According to Bild, Hoeness stated,

It’s a total disaster. A drama! The way things look, his season is over. The Euro championship is over, you can totally forget about it. Forget it. All this “he has to be [fit] by then” — total nonsense. He has to do shit! He has to be fit again for next season. We’re helping him with that.

It’s clear that Hoeness does not want Niklas Süle to rush back from injury and make his knee any worse.

This development could possibly aggravate tensions between Hoeness and the German national team. Ever since Löw decided to drop Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng, and Mats Hummels, their relationship has soured. Hoeness even threatened to stop sending Bayern Munich players to play with the DFB earlier this year over the drama surrounding Marc-André ter Stegen’s discontent as perpetual backup keeper to Manuel Neuer.

Löw will again have to make a tough decision for which defenders he decides to call up. With Süle out, the German national team coach may want to give Hummels or Boateng (or both?) another chance to play with Germany.

At the press conference before Bayern Munich’s Champions League game against Olympiakos in Greece, Niko Kovac added (Bild),

Niklas is an important part of our and the German team. He needs the necessary time, because he already had an injury in the same knee. He must not start to want too much too soon.

UPDATE: Süle also has torn meniscus in his left knee (Bild)

Uli Hoeness’ dramatic comment about Süle’s availability for Germany was more right than we initially knew. According to Bild’s information, further damage in Süle’s left knee was detected during the operation to repair his ACL. Süle has also torn his meniscus and will require much longer to recover from the injury. His season may indeed be over, although he reportedly still aims to recover in time for Euro 2020.
