Full-time observations:

  • Three points but not an impressive performance, the Germans were clearly not motivated enough and that gave them trouble in the first half.
  • Abysmal first half followed by a decent second-half. Can’s red card certainly didn’t help, but it doesn’t excuse the overall poor performance.
  • That being said, Germany did their job in the second-half and will return to Germany with three points - which was the goal.
  • Many players who doesn’t play too often had a chance to impress, none took it. Luca Waldschmidt and Emre Can both had a poor game.

90’— This game has been over for a while, Germany does the job, but it has not been an impressive performance.

85’— Last substitution by Germany. Nadiem Amiri comes on for Julian Brandt!

84’— Werner has another chance but Lepmets does well yet again.

81’— Estonia has another half-chance but Neuer does well.

79’— Estonia has made 253 passes while Germany has made 600

76’— Suat Serdar comes on for Marco Reus

75’— Germany is in control after a good second-half.

72’— Estonian goalkeeper Lepmets does a great save after a shot from Julian Brandt.

70’— TOOOOR! Germany will leave Tallinn with three points, Werner breaks free and is clinical in front of goal.

65’— Timo Werner comes on for Luca Waldschmidt, who has been poor to say the least.

61’— Estonia has another opportunity to score, good cross that is cleared in the last minute by Klostermann.

56’— TOOOOOR! Gundogan again! That surely settles it, after a horrid first half performance, Germany has settled nerves early in the second-half.

54’— A big relief for Germany, they have not played well, although now it will be a difficult task for Estonia.

52’— Löw looked incredibly relieved.

51’— TOOOOR! Gundogan, Germany’s best player so far, scores after a nice shot outside the penalty-box. Nice technique from Ilkay.

50’— Second half has started as the first one ended.

46’— Estonia counters and gets the first shot on goal this half, never a dangerous shot but this game can go either way.

46’— Second half begins in Tallinn! It can only get better for the Germans, unless it gets worse.

Half-time observations:

  • The red card is really no excuse for the absolute horrid performance the Germans are displaying. Offensive it lacks efficiency, creativity and quality. Defence looks shaky, which could partly be explained by the red card.
  • Estonia are playing great and their amazing crowd deserves to be rewarded.
  • An Estonian win would be one of the greatest upsets in modern international football history - and after the first 45 minutes, it doesn’t look too unlikely.
  • Julian Brandt can’t cross a ball to save his life.

44’— It has been an abysmal German performance.

39’— Reus has a free-kick that hits the bar, closest Germany has been all game.

35’— Brandt gets into a good crossing position but again fails to deliver a good cross.

33’— There is 1.3 million people living in Estonia, which is 13 of Berlin’s population.

32’— Julian Brandt has been abysmal.

31’— If Estonia wins this game, it would be one of the biggest upsets in international football in recent memory.

30’— Another chance from Estonia, they know have as many clear-cut chances as the Germans.

29’— Estonia’s goalkeeper gets a yellow card for taking too much time, can’t remember the last time I saw that in the 29th minute.

28’— I’ll say it again: Fantastic crowd.

27’— Another long shot that this times goes wide. Germany are struggling to come up with something creative while having to worry they have one less defender.

24’— Waldschmidt strikes far away and creates Germany’s first shot on goal.

23’— Germany has had nothing except for one chance. Remarkable.

22’— Estonia are, understandably, still dropping deep but look much more dangerous when trying to counter. Time for Löw to put in a centre-back?

18’— Estonia has started off really well and even before the red card looked like they were much more up for it than Germany. Now they must think they have every chance to create what would be the international upset of the year.

17’— Big chance for Estonia after a corner, they are very much in this game.

16’—Estonia did well before the red card as well, the Germans look shocked.

15’— Wow, this was really not planned from the Germans. They are still massive favourites to win this game, but obviously, those chances got limited by Can’s second of madness.

13’— RED CARD FOR EMRE CAN! Oh wow, deservedly so! This game just got interesting...

11’— We often talk about ‘David v Goliath’ but it has to be mentioned again. Last time these two teams played Germany won 8-0, and Estonia has only 1 point so far in the qualification stage: 0-0 against Belarus (which they got last game).

10’— Not a chance since Emre Can’s opportunity, credit to Estonia for that.

5’— The Germans are pressuring high and the Estonians are so far doing a decent job of playing the ball through the back. Although it is clear this will be a one sided game.

5’— Estonia has survived the first five minutes.

3’— First chance for the Germans, this time it is Emre Can who is close to scoring.

1’— You can tell that it is a special occasion on the stands, fans are loud so far.

0’— Kickoff at A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn! Upsets always happen but it is hard to imagine a scenario where Germany wins with three goals or less.

Jogi Löw has decided to go with a three man backline against Estonia in this one. Emre Can, Niklas Süle, and Marcel Halstenberg are the main defenders in this one; however, Germany are going with Joshua Kimmich as a defensive midfielder ahead of that backline to add a little bit of support if Estonia can find themselves out on a break.

Kimmich is partnered in the middle of the park with Kai Havertz, who will certainly spend the majority of his time in the attack. They’re flanked on either side by Lukas Klostermann and Ilkay Gundogan.

Up top, Löw has decided on an attacking triangle of Julian Brandt and Marco Reus sitting right behind Luca Waldschmidt who is the point man in the attack. It’s a big moment for the Freiburg man, as he looks to cement his spot in this team moving forward.

Germany XI: Neuer — Can, Süle, Halstenberg — Klostermann, Havertz, Kimmich, Gündogan — Brandt, Reus — Waldschmidt

Germany and Estonia take part in another round of UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifying today. It’s Germany’s sixth match of Group I and Estonia’s seventh. With three teams atop Group I on twelve points, all three remaining matches are must win for the Germans.

Estonia has only picked up one point so far in qualifying — a scoreless draw against Belarus in Minsk. In the reverse fixture, the Germans beat Estonia 8-0 in Mainz. In that match, Serge Gnabry bagged two goals and Leon Goretzka scored one.

The final matchday of Euro 2020 Qualifying is going to be the big match when Germany host Northern Ireland at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt. It’s almost certain that the loser of this match won’t be playing next summer in Euro 2020.

It’s Bayern GERMANY! time.
