Earlier this week, Chicago Fire star and Bayern Munich legend Bastian Schweinsteiger indicated that he was contemplating his future after the Fire was eliminated from the MLS playoffs yet again. It would not be far-fetched, if the 2014 World Cup winner ultimately made a return to Säbener Strasse.
Schweinsteiger is nearing the end of the MLS season and is unsure whether he will continue to play. If he opts to retire, Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge could see Schweinsteiger re-joining the Bavarians in one capacity or another.
Rummenigge told Abendzeitung that he would be delighted to see Schweinsteiger return to the club after hanging up his cleats:
FC Bayern is always interested in connecting important former players to the club; for example I would love to see Bastian Schweinsteiger with us. I have a lot of contact with Basti. We text regularly and sometimes talk on the phone. I told him to think about whether that might be an attractive option for him.
Schweinsteiger has primarily played a defensive role as a center-back this season with the Fire, occasionally venturing forward into the midfield.
