Stuttgart wanted Alphonso Davies, but then Bayern Munich happened

Ever wonder why he was so expensive? Looks like our Canadian starlet was more sought after than we thought.

In an interview with AZ, current Stuttgart sporting director Michael Reschke revealed that his club were chasing Vancouver Whitecaps starlet Alphonso Davies, but Bayern Munich beat them out for his signature. Congratulating the Bavarians on their new acquisition, here’s what he had to say:

I was in Vancouver at the same time as Bayern and we tried to get the boy, but at the end Bayern had a few more arrows in the quiver. Congratulations to them.

In case you didn’t know, Michael Reschke used to be Bayern’s technical director during the days of Uli Hoeness’ prison sentence. He is notably astute in the transfer market and knows his youth transfers especially well. In fact, Reschke is the one who signed Joshua Kimmich from Stuttgart back in 2015, back when our golden boy was still an unknown prospect in the 2.Bundesliga. He was directly responsible for the club’s acquisition of Kinglsey Coman in the same summer, at a time when Coman was being wasted on Juventus’ bench. If he wanted Davies at Stuttgart, then we fans can rest assured that the hype is real.

This also proves that Bayern did in fact face competition for Davies’ signature. While we had sporadic rumors of interest from Liverpool, Huddersfield, and Paris Saint-Germain (one of these teams is not like the others), this is the first time we’ve gotten confirmation of interest from another top flight European club. It’s now easy to see why Bayern chose to fork out at least $13m for the kid. He really could be something special.

Alphonso Davies will join Bayern in January, after he turns 18. I, for one, can’t wait until he gets here.
