Leon Goretzka is one of the reasons for Bayern Munich supporters to be excited this preseason. The transfer from Schalke 04 is a young, exciting midfielder with a box-to-box prowess; oh, and he ultimately opted for Bavaria over FC Barcelona.

During his press conference yesterday, Goretzka was open and candid about his transfer process and where he sees himself fitting in on the field as captured by Football Espana.

Leon Goretzka insists he made the right choice in choosing Bayern Munich despite several other offers – one of which was from Barcelona. The midfielder reached agreement with the Bavarians last January after deciding he would let his contract with Schalke expire, and was officially presented as a Bayern player this week.

The 23-year-old, who started his career with hometown club Bochum, was the subject of interest from a number of Europe’s top clubs and was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona before the summer. However, he told reporters as far as he was concerned he made the correct choice to join the Bundesliga champions, but it was only their offer that stopped him leaving Germany. “I have made the best choice by coming to Bayern,” said Goretzka. “Of course, it was an honor when I heard of their interest. “I had several options and took a lot of time in deciding, but I believe the decision I made was the right one.”

Goretzka was a prized target in the winter transfer window and had many suitors after a thoroughly impressive 2017 Confederations Cup performance last summer. As a midfielder, the 23-year old was seen as a long-term solution for many big clubs before he chose to sign with Bayern. Goretzka then touched on what spot he prefers and also his early thoughts on working with Niko Kovač:

I see myself as a No 8 but I am versatile and ready to play in different positions. I have a very positive impression of boss Niko Kovač and everything else will start to happen over the next few days.

Goretzka was not utilized much during his World Cup stint with Germany this summer, but the team’s performance definitely had an effect on him and he was grateful for the support he received:

I have thought about the World Cup a lot ever since. But it was helpful to have people around me. My mother and father have always supported me.

Goretzka is one of the players currently involved in Bayern’s midfield logjam, which could be a little less crowded later today. It will be interesting to see where he slots and how much he plays as Kovač tries to sort through a rotation to maximize his talent, while also keeping that talent happy.
