Sebastian Rudy has rapidly become the surprise transfer story of the summer. After initial reports of a potential transfer deal between Rudy and RB Leipzig, Bild (paywall) spotted Schalke 04’s young coach Domenico Tedesco — who recently extended his contract until 2022 — at Munich Airport. The reason? A meeting with Rudy.
Schalke are flush with cash after selling their youthful center-back Thilo Kehrer to Paris Saint-Germain for a whopping €37 million. Although that transfer effectively killed Bayern Munich’s chances of offloading Jerome Boateng to PSG, some of that money could find its way back to Munich.
Sebastian Rudy has been on Schalke’s radar for months. According to Bild (via Sport Bild) Christian Heidel obtained permission from sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic to negotiate with Rudy in May. At the time, Schalke was considering a loan. Rudy also swiftly denied interest in a transfer away from Bayern.
Could Rudy have changed his mind after the World Cup? At Schalke, with the departure of Max Meyer to Crystal Palace (on yet another free transfer after Leon Goretzka), Schalke, like Leipzig, have a hole at the heart of their midfield to fill. Rudy’s fit at Schalke is arguably even better than at Leipzig, and he would moreover secure himself the opportunity to play in the Champions League, where Schalke are bound after finishing as runners-up to Bayern last season.
