Bayern Munich thoroughly dominated Eintracht Frankfurt capturing their third consecutive DFL Supercup crown with a 5-0 victory. It is hard to be critical of those that featured and it was especially satisfying to see Manuel Neuer’s calming presence at the back.
Jersey Swap: Mijat Gacinovic
Mijat Gacinovic presented the only threat all day for the Bavarians. The 23-year-old Serb was employed as a right winger/ central attacking midfielder and his dribbling created issues for Die Roten’s backline. He drew a free kick near the end of the first half, which was arguably Frankfurt’s most dangerous moment. Although Gacinovic was unable to make an impact on the score sheet, he threatened to penetrate the partnership of Niklas Sule and Mats Hummels several times.
Tip of the Cap: Kingsley Coman
The young Frenchmen was everywhere in his limited cameo subbing-on for Arjen Robben. The crafty winger put in a few good crosses and kept the Eagles’ defense on their heels. Along with his back post tap-in thanks to the service of David Alaba, Coman diced through Frankfurt’s defense for an impressive assist to Thiago in the 85th minute. This cameo showed that Coman can cut it on both the right and the left side of the attack. If the talented winger can remain healthy, this may prove to be a big campaign. Coman has the potential to take the world by storm.
Golf Clap: Robbery
Rumours of their demise are premature. Although Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have been on the wrong side of 30 for a few years, they have given Niko Kovac food for thought. Their active pressing and aggressive attacking persisted well into the second half, showing they have a lot left to give to the Rekordmeister.
Standing Ovation: The Fullbacks
Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba are two of the best fullbacks in the world. Their defensive solidity coupled with their attacking dynamism was on full display in the DFL Supercup. Both Alaba and Kimmich contributed a total of three assists on the day while foiling Frankfurt’s attack down the flanks. Even after the introduction of Ante Rebic, both continued to silence to Eagles’ forward momentum. Their service to Robben, Ribery, Coman and Lewandowski was pivotal today and will prove vital moving forward. Each had a prototypical modern fullback performance, which will give Kovac much need solidity down each wing.
Meister of the Match: Robert Lewandowski
IF YOU COME AT THE KING YOU BEST NOT MISS!
Despite never-ending links away from Bayern Munich, Lewandowski proved that he is primed to have another big campaign for the Bavarian Giants. A hat-trick and, more importantly, a fiery performance from the Polish hitman showed he has no intention of slowing down in the face of a disappointing World Cup. It was awesome to see Lewandowski play with passion as he battled with David Abraham. A fired up Lewandowski is exactly what Bayern need heading into the Bundesliga and Champions League. Abraham came at the King with a late elbow and he most certainly missed. RL9 is a Bayern player and he is clearly itching to prove his quality.
