When Bayern Munich made the signing of Vancouver Whitecaps youngster Alphonso Davies official yesterday, it was easy to think of a German legend who had an up close view of the Canadian 17-year old: Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Schweinsteiger, who has suited up for the Chicago Fire in the MLS over the past two seasons, had a chance to play against Davies on July 7th at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. In that game, Davies registered an assist on a goal by Kei Kamara to give the Whitecaps a 3-1 lead before the Fire eventually close the gap to 3-2 to give the game its final margin.
Regardless of the result, the game gave Schweinsteiger enough time to make this assessment of Davies as told to the Münchner Merkur:
He has great potential with his speed, with his technique. If he works hard, especially on his defense, of course he can make it in Europe.
Highlights from the game are below:
You can see the fine work of Davies through out the highlight reel, but his assist is featured at about the two minute mark.
For his part, Davies seems like he is ready for the next step of his career.

“I am very happy about my change to @FCBayern. As a child, I have always dreamed of such a moment. Now the dream has come true. But now the work continues, now I have to give everything to take advantage of this opportunity. “ #AlphonsoDavies #MiaSanMia
With his arrival expected in Munich on January 1, 2019, Davies will still have some work to do in Vancouver over the coming months in preparation for his move.
