Bayern Munich and Hamburg announced that the two clubs will play a friendly in the middle of August. Sandwiched between the DFL Supercup against Eintracht Frankfurt and their opening DFB Pokal game against SV Drochtersen Assel, the match will take place at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on August 15.
Hamburg, you’ll remember, was relegated at the end of the Bundesliga season in a fiery, smokey finale. This will be the first time since the Bundesliga’s founding that Hamburg will not be a part of the festivities.
This will be a trip to a former club for Bayern coach Niko Kovac and Bayern sporting directory Hasan Salihamidzic. Kovac spent two years at Hamburg, while Salihamidzic was there for three seasons. Both were there in the late 90s; however, their time at the club didn’t overlap.
Bayern have a hot start to the season with their first five Bundesliga matches home against Hoffenheim, away to Stuttgart, home against Bayer Leverkusen, away to Schalke, and home against Augsburg.
