Via its Twitter account (@FCBayern), Bayern Munich revealed that Javi Martinez has suffered a “mild sprain of a knee joint” as a result of a collision with U-19 player Angelo Stiller at this morning’s training session.

There was no further information provided or even an estimate about how much time Martinez would miss, but any prolonged absence would likely keep him out of action for the entirety of the International Champions Cup tour.
With Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, and Niklas Süle missing the tour as they recuperate from World Cup action, and Lars Lukas Mai also battling an injury, the versatile Martinez was likely going to be counted on to play center back during the preseason schedule.
Now, however, it appears the center backs for Bayern could be David Alaba and a host of U-23 players. Alaba’s move to center back would be only out of necessity and a short-term solution until the German internationals listed above return from holiday. The Austrian’s ability to shift inside will come in handy just to help the squad survive the tour.
