The fans have spoken: already voted “player of the month” three times this season, Sven Ulreich has been voted “player of the year” by the fans of Bayern Munich, receiving a third of the votes—32.7%. Dynamic right-back Joshua Kimmich followed him in second place with 25% (FCBayern.com).
Ulreich leaped into action early in the season, after Manuel Neuer refractured a metatarsal in his left foot. Ulreich went on to play a full 47 games, exiting with a clean sheet 17 times. Although Ulreich indeed made a crucial mistake in the Champions League semifinals against Real Madrid, Bayern’s fans showed their class and appreciation for all Ulreich did to turn around what could very well have been a lost season for his club.

Ulreich delighted fans especially as an absolute penalty-killer this season. He saved penalties in the Bundesliga against Bayern’s own loanee Serge Gnabry (Hoffenheim), against Chadrak Akolo (Stuttgart), and Niklas Füllkrug (Hannover 96), He stopped what would have been a decisive penalty by Timo Werner in the the second round of the DFB-Pokal, ensuring saving Bayern from a premature exit. He also stopped both Sebastian Rode and Marc Bartra in the shootout against Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of the season, securing the Supercup. Only Mönchengladbach’s Thorgan Hazard was able to beat Ulreich from the penalty spot.
It is no exaggeration to say that Ulreich’s outstanding performances saved Bayern’s season. Hats off to you, #SvenTheWall!
