The Bayern Munich Frauen bested rival and powerhouse VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 to set themselves up nicely for a return trip to the Champions League. The win came just a week after dropping the DFB Pokal final to the Wolves on penalty kicks.
With one game left in the women’s season, the Bayern Frauen have put themselves in an advantageous position. To miss out on the Champions League, the Frauen would have to lose next week against Frankfurt and SC Freiburg would have to win over SGS Essen, while also making up an 11-goal differential.
Wolfburg had already clinched the Bundesliga title, but Bayern still had a lot to play for in its quest to secure a Champions League position. On FCBayern.com, the club celebrated the performance.
Revenge succeeded! Thanks to an outstanding first half Bayern Munich beat VfL Wolfsburg 2-1. The goals were scored by Dominika Skorvankova (18’) and Fridolina Rolfö (35’). For Wolfsburg, who have already secured the title of German champions, Zsanett Jakabfi (48’) scored to make it 2:1.
Frauen coach Thomas Wörle was extremely happy with his team’s performance.
We played very well today. Everything was fine with our game. This is a great backdrop on the FC Bayern campus and fits perfectly with women’s football. We would be happy if we could play here more often.
The match, which took place for the first time for the Munich women on the FC Bayern Campus, had 2,130 spectators attend, which was a season record.
