Jerome Boateng has been open about the possibility of seeking a transfer outside of Munich. He waxed nostalgic about all that he has accomplished at Bayern, and pondered a future under different conditions which can certainly be interpreted as a different club. According to SportBild, those comments have pushed the Bayern brass to seriously consider moving on from him this summer.
The fact that Boateng now, again, dealt publicly with a farewell from Munich, which was not well-received by the club.
While this news comes on the heels of a frustrating Champions League exit, the reality is that Boateng’s exit has likely been in the works for months. Niklas Süle has played very well at center back this season while filling in for both Boateng and Mats Hummels. The 22-year old has been in form, is fit, and has been incredibly productive on the back line while Boateng, who turns 30 this September, has seen yet another season be truncated by injuries.
To replace Boateng’s spot on the roster, Bayern has already been scouting 18 year-old Ajax starlet Mattijs de Ligt, suggesting that Bayern have been proactive in case of Boateng’s departure. Should that transfer fall through, there is always Lukas Mai, who had a strong season with Bayern II and showed flashes of brilliance in his appearances with the senior club.
