In what can only be described as a “double secret trial”, Bayern Munich have apparently been hosting Gabriele Corbo, an 18 year old defender from Spezia Calcio since early march and have already completed his physical. Bayern must have liked what they saw as they are now on the verge of signing him to a 5 year contract.

That Bayern are signing a young and talented defender is not surprising. It’s not even surprising that they were able to find one who’s contract is expiring thus limiting their transfer agreement with the host club to peanuts (rumored to be in the area of 250k). What IS a little surprising is that Bayern were able to beat out teams like Juventus and Inter for a young Italian defender.

Where he will fit on the Bayern roster is still up in the air. Bayern are flush with central defenders for now, but in the reserves and academy levels, the cupboard is a little more bare. Corbo would surely help buoy the ranks of Bayern II while getting a summer’s worth of friendlies with the big club, an experience which will only bolster the 18 year old’s career.
