Report: Frenkie de Jong chooses PSG

If true, this would eliminate any sort of “package deal” with Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt...

In a somewhat shocking turn of events, Ajax midfielder and Dutch starlet Frenkie de Jong has allegedly chosen to move to Paris Saint-Germain, though nothing official has been announced per Dutch publication De Telegraaf.

The report states that PSG officials swept into Amsterdam today to try and negotiate a quick deal at the behest of Kylian Mbappe.

Ajax almost certainly loses Frenkie de Jong to Paris Saint-Germain this summer and collects 75 million euros. The 21-year old midfielder prefers the French top club surprisingly above Manchester City. A delegation from PSG, where the star players Neymar and Kylian Mbappé are also under contract, made a ‘robbery’ in Amsterdam on Thursday and would like to put the sum of 75 million euros requested by Ajax director Marc Overmars on the table. Overmars confirmed the visit of the French, but said that there is no final agreement yet and that more clubs have shown interest.

With Ajax confirming that the visit took place, it lends much credence to the report. Without a final deal, however, many things could happen before the pen hits the paper. The most interesting part of the story was that Mbappe prodded PSG to pursue de Jong after being impressed with the Dutchman.

Paris Saint-Germain acted decisively. Mbappé recently called on his club leadership to bring in Frenkie de Jong. The only 19-year-old French striker was deeply impressed by the top talent from Amsterdam during the recent matches with the Dutch national team. Both top talents had contact with each other at the international matches. From Paris, there was no hesitation for a second.

BFW Analysis

Of all the players Bayern Munich has been linked to, de Jong was among those that was least important given the current talent on the roster. With Thiago Alcantara, Leon Goretzka, Renato Sanches, Joshua Kimmich (if he remains as a CDM), Corentin Tolisso, and possibly James Rodriguez (should Bayern opt to purchase the Colombian this summer), de Jong may have been facing a battle for playing time in Munich anyway.
