Phonzie is finally here! Bayern Munich’s newest signing, now 18-year-old Canadian Alphonso Davies arrived in Munich and took in the city. After a stroll around his new home and a medical check, Davies was ready to hit the pitch for his first training session with the team.

Davies was greeted by the team with a round of applause and got to meet coach Niko Kovac and many of his new teammates. Sandro Wagner lifted his arm triumphantly in the air in a Rocky-like gesture. Davies gravitated toward two of his likely role-models on the team, Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman. Davies chatted with the French international, now on the cusp of making his return after long injury, as they jogged at practice.

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic is already looking forward to the moment when Davies is eligible to play for Bayern when the season recommences in January. He said,

Alphonso will train normally during the four weeks until the winter break and will have time to settle in here and in Munich. He’ll be part of the squad and available to play from 4 January. We’re excited about him. I’m sure he’ll develop here at FC Bayern and help us. I wish him the best of luck and success.

Davies himself was impressed by what he saw. He said,

My first impressions of the training ground were great, As a kid I dreamed of being part of such a big club. Now I am and it’s unbelievable. I’m very excited and looking forward to my time. I want to prove myself every day in training and work hard.

That attitude will serve him very well under Kovac, who has driven the players in training in anticipation of a fight back up the Bundesliga table.
