Boateng furious in the locker room post-game

Bayern Munich’s veteran center-back was livid after the team gave up a lead twice and left the pitch dismayed by individual mistakes.

The reporters in the mixed zone had their eyes and ears peeled as Bayern Munich’s disappointed players made their way to the locker room at the Signal Iduna Park. According to Bild (paywall), Jerome Boateng in particular was livid.

Boateng reportedly stormed into the locker room, slamming the door behind him. An object could be heard crashing against the wall inside. As others filed in, a voice boomed out — Bild does not make it clear whether it was Boateng or another player —

Fuck off! Always the same shit!

Fuck off! Immer die gleiche Scheiße! The initial expletive was indeed in English.

Boateng played a relatively solid game, making a last-man tackle on Paco Alcacer just past the hour mark, but he was helpless to prevent either Dortmund’s second or third goal. Boateng could be seen throwing his hands up in frustration after Marco Reus, left unmarked, scored. While both Boateng and Niklas Süle marked Alcacer, Reus drifted from the left into the vacant space between the center-backs and Javi Martinez.

On the final counter, Boateng was hung out to dry. Süle had advanced high up the left flank ostensibly to contest for the ball, leaving Boateng alone in the the back field with Javi Martinez. When Süle was outmaneuvered, Boateng could only look on as Alcacer kept ahead of Martinez and scored past Manuel Neuer.

Speaking to Fox after the match, Robert Lewandowski lamented Bayern’s “many small mistakes.” Joshua Kimmich struck a similar note in remarks to Bild:

We can’t manage to avoid making mistakes over 90 minutes. In the second half, we invite Dortmund and cheat ourselves of our own good performance. Whoever doesn’t now develop the hunger to climb back to the top is in the wrong place with us.
