Bayern Munich bagged their third consecutive win across all competitions with their 2-1 victory over Mainz at the Opel Arena, but it came at a cost. Leon Goretzka scored Bayern’s opening goal in the 39th minute and was enjoying one of his stronger performances of the season alongside Thiago and Javi Martinez in midfield. Unfortunately, just moments into the second half, Goretzka pulled up with an ankle injury and looked to be in a considerable amount of discomfort. After being assessed on the pitch by Bayern’s medical staff for a few brief moments, he was helped off the pitch and went straight down the tunnel at the Opel Arena. He was officially replaced by Renato Sanches in the 55th minute.
The goal is even better with Spanish commentary:

Bizarrely, Goretzka’s injury came well off of the ball and no one had touched him. He was just outside of Mainz’s box when his foot seemed to get slightly stuck in the grass right as he was about to make a run into the box. It looked like he rolled his ankle as he went to take his first step forward in anticipation of a cross coming in from the left flank.
Hopefully for Goretzka and Bayern, the injury isn’t anything too serious as the injury list is already frustratingly long for Niko Kovac and company. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, especially after how positive Goretzka looked before sustaining his injury.
