To say that Sven Ulreich has been an important player for FC Bayern Munich this season would be quite an understatement. After being forced into action due to Manuel Neuer’s long-term injury, and having a few hiccups in his first few games, the backup has been lights-out for the Bavarian giants, making crucial saves across all competitions, and even turning into, as Germans call it, an Elfmeterkiller — penalty-kick killer.
Not surprisingly, that has drawn praise from all over — including being ranked the best German keeper in the Bundesliga this season — but, most importantly, his bosses have obviously noticed. In December, coach Jupp Heynckes recommended that the club open talks on an extension to the contract that’s expiring this summer, but now club president Uli Hoeness has waded in with a clear message: Ulreich must stay!
Speaking to kicker from his house on the Tegernsee, while the team prepares for the second part of the season thousands of miles away in Qatar, Hoeness showered the 29-year old keeper with praise:
For me, Sven Ulreich is the man of the year. He helped FC Bayern immensely, to make the turnaround succeed.
“He absolutely has to extend his contract” Hoeness continues. Despite previously having expressed an interest in leaving at the end of his deal, Ulreich is said to be open to contract talks, according to kicker, although there haven’t been any official talks yet.
But, as we all know, what Uli wants, Uli gets. The demand has been made by the big boss, now it’s up to Hasan Salihamidzic to fulfill his wishes. The sporting director has indicated that the club will open contract discussions in the spring, and, along with Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Rafinha, Ulreich’s future with Bayern will be decided in the next few months.
