Another day, another youth transfer rumor. This time, it seems as if Bayern Munich are eyeing the services of young French forward Willem Geubbels. Already having made short cameos for the Olympique Lyonnais this season, the 16-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of big clubs around Europe.
According to L’Equipe, Bayern submitted a bid of around €9m in the summer, but Lyon rejected it. If true, that would mean there’s something special about the kid. Bayern don’t offer that kind of money for just anyone. The young Frenchman plays as a winger—a position the Bavarians will need to fill in the near future. While it is unlikely that he would see action straight away, Geubbels’s profile fits with some of Bayern’s recent youth signings—such as Swedish youth international Alex Timossi Andersson and Korean youngster Woojeong Jong.
There’s very little information available about Geubbels—his transfermarkt profile is bare, so it’s hard to say anything more about it. However, his contract reportedly runs out in the summer of 2019. Coincidentally, that’s exactly when a slew of new youth players are scheduled to join Bayern’s ranks. Could Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rumenigge be planning to craft another “golden generation”?
Lyon reportedly want to sign Geubbels to a new contract, but his entourage is delaying the process. Seems like a perfect opportunity for Bayern to pounce.
