One last chance to say thank you to a legend.

Bayern Munich and the Chicago Fire announced that the two clubs will play a match this summer at the Allianz Arena as a testimonial to living legend Bastian Schweinsteiger. The match will take place on August 28, after the Bavarians return to Munich from their summer tour of the United States.

“I’m really looking forward to walking back out at the Allianz Arena and hopefully meeting lots of fans who’ve been there since the start of my career,” Schweinsteiger said. “I’m especially looking forward to seeing the fans on the south terrace, as we’ve always had a great relationship.”

Since leaving Bayern, Schweinsteiger hasn’t played in front of a raucous home crowd like he did in Munich. Neither Manchester United nor the Chicago Fire can boast the kind of home support that Bayern get from the Südkurve.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was full of praise for the former Bayern midfielder.

“Bastian Schweinsteiger had an extraordinary career and left his mark on a highly successful era for FC Bayern. In addition he was an important member of the Bayern family with his strong personality, and will always remain so. There was absolutely no doubt that Bayern Munich would say thank you with a testimonial match.”

Schweinsteiger will play one half for each team.
