After easily dispatching third division side Chemnitzer FC in the opening round of the DFB Pokal, FC Bayern Munich will find out today who they will face in the next round, which will be played on October 24th and 25th. The draw is scheduled to start at noon Eastern Time.
Who will the Reds run into? Will it be one of the underdog teams that surprised their higher division opponents? Or will it be a professional team from the first or second division?
Five “lesser” teams are in pot 2
Four third division teams remain, including 1. FC Magdeburg, who shocked Bundesliga club FC Augsburg, and VfL Osnabrück, who booted Hamburger SV from the competition, along with a single amateur team from the Regionalliga Bayern, 1. FC Schweinfurt 05. All five of these teams are in pot 2, which will be drawn as the home team in the first five matchups. They will face off against one of the 27 professional teams in pot 1 — 16 Bundesliga teams, and 11 2. BL teams.
After that, it’s a free-for-all
Once all the teams in pot 2 have been drawn, it’s a completely random draw among the remaining 22 clubs. There will be no seeding of teams, so Bundesliga duels are possible, including having a matchup of Borussia Dortmund against FC Bayern as early as the second round (no jinx!!!). Home advantage depends on who gets pulled first for each fixture.
Will Bayern have an easy draw, but have to travel? Or will they get a top opponent at home? Or, will it be the worst of both worlds, having to play at a fellow Bundesliga club’s stadium? We will know very soon.
