Shortly before kickoff against Darmstadt on Saturday, Bayern Munich announced that Sven Ulreich would miss the rest of the season due to an elbow ligament injury that he picked up in training.
This means that the ever-mysterious Tom Starke gets the start in Bayern’s final three matches of the season. It’s expected that Bayern II goalkeeper Leo Weinkauf will continue on as the backup for the final matches.
This is probably the last that we’ve seen of Ulreich in a Bayern jersey. He’s fully expected to leave the club this summer after two years of deputizing for Manuel Neuer. He understandably wants to be a starter again.
Ulreich is the third Bayern goalkeeper to see his season end early this year. Manuel Neuer, of course, injured his foot against Real Madrid in the second UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal match. Young prospect Christian Früchtl has also missed the last few months due to an injury.
