Mats Hummels is officially on vacation until July 1, when team training with Bayern Munich recommences, but he is dedicating precious off-season time to a very worthy cause: Hummels has spent the last three days in Malawi as a UNICEF ambassador to raise awareness in Germany and beyond.

Hummels posted impressions from his trip on Twitter and Instagram, adding his thoughts on what he saw (English translation follows the German in the post below):

As reported by the Malawi Times Group, Hummels “played it tight avoided any football talk” during the three days he spent in Malawi. He visited the Chimwemwe Child Care Centre at Mpinji, Dedza District, which lies near the southern tip of Lake Malawi, where he took part in serving the children porridge.

The primary goal of his visit was to raise awareness of the plight of children in Malawi. Hummels told the Times Group,

My visit should help in many ways and there will be donations from Germany. I want to raise awareness for this cause in my country so that they can donate more money to people in Malawi, especially the children.

The trip is part of a broader campaign in anticipation of a donation marathon sponsored by German television group RTL (the RTL-Spendenmarathon) scheduled for November.

Naturally, there was a little time for some soccer, too.
