Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid: A history of Champions League clashes

These two legendary clubs are familiar with each other.

Bayern v Real Madrid

Two of the biggest clubs in the world will meet on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will meet for the third time in the last five years.

Since the 1999-2000 season, Bayern and Madrid have met seven times in the knockout stages of the Champions League. In those matches, the team that advanced made it to the final five times, lifting the Champions League trophy on four of those occasions.

There have been some epic moments in those matches, so let’s look back at them.

2013-2014 Semifinals

Real Madrid advances 5-0.

After a solid 0-1 loss in Madrid, Pep Guardiola sent his men out in the reverse fixture with a high pressing line, hoping to catch Madrid off-balance and score an early goal. The match was completely two goals in the first twenty minutes by Sergio Ramos ended all hopes of a Bayern comeback. Cristiano Ronaldo would add two more goals for Madrid to complete the Bayern humiliation.

Real Madrid would beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 (after extra time) to win the Champions League.

2011-2012 Semifinals

Bayern Munich advances 3-1 on penalties after 3-3 draw.

Franck Ribery gave Bayern the 1-0 lead in Munich, before Mesut Ozil equalized with a second half goal. With the seconds in the match ticking away, Mario Gomez gave Bayern the 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena to give them an advantage heading into the Santiago Bernabéu. Two quick Cristiano Ronaldo goals in Madrid gave the hosts the lead, but a penalty by Arjen Robben pulled the two sides level on aggregate. A disastrous penalty shootout in which Ronaldo, Kaka, Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos, and Philipp Lahm all miss saw Bayern advance 3-1 on penalties.

Bayern Munich would fall on penalties to Chelsea after a 1-1 draw in the Champions League Final.

2006-2007 Round of 16

Bayern Munich advances on away goals after a 4-4 draw.

A goal-fest in Madrid saw Raul and Lucio open the scoring for both sides. However, another goal from Raul and a strike from Ruud van Nistelrooy put Madrid up 3-1. In the dying moments, Mark van Bommel would pull one back to give Bayern two away goals heading home to Munich. Roy Makaay would open the scoring within the first ten seconds in Munich with the fastest goal ever scored in the Champions League. Lucio’s second half goal meant that Madrid would need two more to advance. They could only manage one, and Bayern were through to the next round.

Bayern Munich would be eliminated by Milan 4-2 in the Quarterfinals of the Champions League.

2003-2004 Round of 16

Real Madrid advances 2-1.

Bayern though they were sitting pretty when Roy Makaay gave them a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute of the first leg in Munich, but it was not to be. A late Roberto Carlos equalizer gave Madrid the away goal they needed heading into the reverse fixture at the Santiago Bernabéu. In Madrid, a first half Zinedine Zidane goal was enough to advance to the quarterfinals.

Real Madrid would be eliminated via away goals by Monaco in the Quarterfinals of the Champions League

2001-2002 Quarterfinals

Real Madrid advances 3-2.

Geremi had Madrid sitting pretty with a one goal lead heading into the 80th minute in Munich, but two quick goals from Stefan Effenberg and Claudio Pizarro gave Bayern the 2-1 victory. In the return leg, Madrid would get two second half goals from Ivan Helguera and Guti to send Bayern packing.

Real Madrid would go on to beat Barcelona in the Semifinals and Bayer Leverkusen in the Final to win the Champions League

2000-2001 Semifinals

Bayern Munich advances 3-1.

Bayern won the first leg 1-0 in Madrid thanks to Giovane Elber. The Brazilian would score one only eight minutes into the second leg in Munich meaning that Madrid would have to score two goals to not be eliminated. Figo would quickly pull one back for Madrid, but Jens Jeremies reestablished Bayern’s two goal lead.

Bayern Munich would beat Valencia on penalties to win the Champions League.

1999-2000 Semifinals

Real Madrid advances 3-2.

After dropping the first leg in Madrid 0-2, Bayern received an early goal from Carsten Jancker. However, Nicolas Anelka’s first half goal put Madrid up two goals with an away goal. Bayern would get a second half tally from Giovane Elber, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Real Madrid would beat Valencia to win the Champions League.
