Bayern Munich opt for very little rotation against Mainz

This is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Carlo Ancelotti has named his lineup for Bayern Munich’s home match against Mainz in the Bundesliga. While we’ve discussed this week about the likelihood of Ancelotti going for a big rotation against Mainz in order to prep for a bigger match midweek, it appears as though Ancelotti has decided that his wasn’t the course of action to take.

David Alaba has to shift to centerback due to injuries to Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez, meaning that Juan Bernat is in at left back. Rafinha is in at right back for Philipp Lahm.

Otherwise, there’s no rotation. Ancelotti is intent to run out both Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben again. With Tuesday’s huge match against Borussia Dortmund looming, this is an odd decision at-best.

The lineup is a rather simple 4-2-3-1 to start but will ebb toward a far more attacking formation when in possession.

The lineup is questionable due to the lack of rotation, but Bayern will hopefully get a few early goals and sub Ribery and Robben out of the match before the hour mark.

Mainz has also revealed their lineup.
