Manuel Neuer will miss this week’s Bundesliga clashes as the goalkeeper picked up a foot injury. Neuer left training on Wednesday with a small injury before immediately undergoing a small operation on his left foot.
Neuer will be unavailable for Saturday’s match against FC Augsburg as well as a very important — at least for the rest of the Bundesliga top 5 — on Tuesday against 1899 TSG Hoffenheim, the club confirmed. Looming on the horizon after these two matches are the scary prospects with a Der Klassiker in 10 days time as well as a UEFA Champions League tie with Real Madrid sandwiching a trip to Bayer Leverkusen. As of now, there is no reason to panic about Neuer’s availability.
Neuer had previously missed the entire international break for Germany with a calf injury. These two injuries in conjunction would represent the longest period of he has missed since the 2008/2009 season with Schalke when he fractured a metatarsal — hilariously, that is also a foot injury.
For Bayern, this gives Sven Ulreich a rare run of games to showcase his talent. Ulreich has made waves — granted, really small ones in a kiddie pool — about starting for a Bundesliga side again if one was interested. If there is an opportunity for Ulreich to highlight himself in the shop window, it’s now.
