On Saturday, during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, the highlight of the match wasn’t any of the goals. Nor was it a great save from Manuel Neuer. The play of the match was the world class tackle from Mats Hummels.
Frankfurt’s Branimir Hrgota split Javi Martinez and Hummels who were trying to play an offside trap. With only open space separating Hrgota from Manuel Neuer, it seemed that Bayern were surely about to fall behind when Hrgota rounded the Bayern goalkeeper.
Then, Hummels happened.
His sliding tackle to deny Hrgota from even attempting a shot is nothing short of perfection. If Hummels if off in even the slightest bit, he fouls Hrgota, concedes a penalty, and receives a red card for his troubles. However, his aim was perfect, and he saved a sure goal to keep Frankfurt off the board.
Watch that tackle again in all of it’s glory.
