Thiago Alcantara suffered a mysterious ankle injury in consequence to Spain’s 3-0 victory over Albania on Friday. Word of the injury came as a surprise, since Thiago scored the third of Spain’s three goals in the 27th minute and played for the entire match, including stoppage time. It is not even known which ankle he has injured.

According to a press release by the Spanish national team, an MRI was performed on Thiago after the game. The scan “determined the extent of the injury” and Bayern Munich has been notified, but the Spanish team has not disclosed how serious the injury is. Spain has secured qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and will play Israel on Monday - without Bayern’s midfielder.

Meanwhile, Arjen Robben powered the Netherlands to a 3-1 win over Belarus. Robben provided an assist on the Netherlands’ opening goal and converted a penalty kick for their second. The Netherlands dispatched Belarus, but they face almost certain elimination on Tuesday. They must beat Sweden, currently in second place, at least 7-0 in order to take their place in the qualifying second-round playoff.
