When Carlo Ancelotti joined Bayern Munich over the summer, there was one familiar face whom the Bayern board kept around to ease the transition. That man was Hermann Gerland. The longtime Bayern Munich coach has now seen the tenure of four different coaching staff’s and will once again be the assistant coach, this time to Carlo Ancelotti.
While already with the staff, Gerland replaces Ancelotti’s longtime assistant coach, and righthand man, Paul Clement who joined Swansea City job earlier this week. Gerland most notably was Pep Guardiola’s go-to man during the Spaniards 3 years at Bayern and has been involved with the Bayern Munich organization since 2001, He originally spent eight years as the Bayern II head coach.
Gerland himself represents a guiding hand in the oganization and has a long track record of coaching Bayern’s biggest stars. Given the struggles the team faced during the Hinrunde with play style and adaptability, maybe a little more Hermann Gerland influence can put the team in the best position to succeed when the Rückrunde kicks off in a few weeks.
