Bayern Munich return to the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday with a massive clash against last year’s runners-up Atletico Madrid. Last season, Bayern were eliminated in the semifinals by Atleti via away goals, and Carlo Ancelotti’s men will be hoping to exact some minor revenge with a win.
For the captain, “revenge” might not be the word that he would use. “It doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow,” Philipp Lahm said in Tuesday’s press conference. “We’re still in the group stage.”
Atletico vs. Bayern
Atletico vs. Bayern
As Lahm said, this is only the group stage, and barring a major disaster, Bayern will be going through to the knockout rounds. Getting into a position where you can make as much noise as possible in the spring is all that matters here. Still, exacting some revenge would be a nice way to end the day.
If Bayern can take a huge three points in Madrid, it makes finishing top of the group a far easier proposition.
