Mats Hummels replaced due to injury in Bayern Munich’s match against Hamburg

What is with Bayern centerbacks and the injury bug? It’s latest victim is Mats Hummels who was withdrawn shortly into the second half of Bayern Munich’s match against Hamburger SV. He was replaced by Jerome Boateng.

The German international suffered the injury late in the first half while challenging Hamburg striker Bobby Wood. The two connected knees while Hummels was backpedaling dropping Hummels to the ground. While Hummels would leave and return to the match a minute later under his own power, he clearly couldn’t continue after the halftime break.

For Bayern this represents yet another blow to their centerback depth. They have a massive fixture mid-week against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and being down both Holger Badstuber and Mats Hummels doesn’t bode well given Jerome Boateng just returned from a long injury layoff himself.

Hopefully, this injury turns out to be nothing more than a simple bruise for Bayern’s newest centerback, but after the last three years you wouldn’t be remiss holding your breath.
