Atletico Madrid, PSV and FC Rostov are the three teams Bayern Munich will face in the group stage of the Champions League. The four teams make up Group D of the Champions League field.
Bayern and Atleti faced off in the semifinals of the Champions League last season. Atleti advanced past Bayern to the Champions League final, beating the German champions 2-2 on the away goals rule. Atleti eventually lost to Real Madrid in the final on penalty kicks.
Atleti have returned most of their players from last season and have added Kevin Gameiro from Sevilla and Nico Gaitan from Benfica to their attack. They drew their first game of the La Liga season against recently promoted Deportivo Alvares.
Bayern will play PSV Eindhoven in the group stage for the second time, the first time being in the 1999-2000 Champions League season. PSV has won the Eredivisie each of the last two seasons, dethroning Ajax as the best club in the Netherlands. They have won all three of their Eredivisie matches so far this season, sitting second in the table behind Feyenoord.
Bayern avoided playing in Russia the last year after having to play CSKA Moscow in 2013-14 and 2014-15, but will have to return to Eastern Europe to face Rostov. They topped Ajax with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in club history. They currently sit sixth in the Russian Premier League table.
Here is the full group stage draw for the 2016-17 Champions League.
