Julian Green and the coaching staff at Bayern Munich agreed that he would no longer play with the reserves. That meant, if he would see the field, he was going to need to prove it on the field for the Bavarians.

Saturday against Inter Milan in Charlotte, he showed us a glimpse as to why every coach has been high on the young man’s future from Jupp Heynckes to Pep Guardiola to Carlo Ancelotti.

David Alaba’s pinpoint cross in the seventh minute was swung in into a perfect, open area behind the defense. Green got onto the end of the ball with a sliding shot that went past Samir Handanović and into the back of the net to give Bayern the early 1-0 lead.

Moments like this shows why Bayern think Green might have the capacity to be a capable backup for Robert Lewandowski up top and is a reason why the club hasn’t spent money on another backup forward.

This wasn’t against a fourth division club. This was Inter’s first choice defense. An improving Green is good news for Bayern.
