Wednesday marks Bayern Munich’s first foray into the summer friendly tournament known as the International Champions Cup. The match in Chicago will pit Bayern against one of Italy’s historic clubs, AC Milan.
If one is new to the game, they don’t know a time in which Milan has been good. The Fightin’ Silvio Berlusconis have struggled in recent seasons, finishing no higher than seventh in the last three years. Perhaps a comeback is in the cards this season for Milan and a return to the Champions League.
With a couple of more regular players returning to his squad, Carlo Ancelotti will get a better opportunity to evaluate where his team stands. There’s still a massive group missing due to Euro 2016, and they won’t be returning to training until Bayern returns to Munich.
For now, these games are a big opportunity for a couple of younger players, noticeably Julian Green and Fabian Benko. Both have played relatively well in Bayern’s friendlies to start the season, and a couple of good performances stateside could boost Ancelotti’s confidence in their ability to deliver when the real games start.
Bayern Munich players not available: Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski, Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, Jerome Boateng, Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman, Joshua Kimmich, Renato Sanches
