Thiago Alcantara left Barcelona in the summer of 2013 for opportunity. The promising “Future of Spain” was relegated to the bench for the majority of the season while older, established players received minutes ahead of him. With his former coach Pep Guardiola joining Bayern Munich, the destination made sense. Now, Thiago’s father would like to see his son make a return to Barcelona on day to play with his brother Rafinha.
“Hopefully, Thiago may one day come back to Barca,” Mazinho said in an interview with Radio Barcelona [via TZ]. “He is a player with the DNA of FC Barcelona.”
Last summer, Thiago signed a new contract with Bayern through 2019 signaling that, Thiago was planning a future in Munich with or without Guardiola, which his father acknowledges. “It is clear that Thiago is happy at Bayern, despite the departure of Pep Guardiola. He has extended his contract and is very happy there.”
The main impetus behind the comments from Mazinho seems to be his desire to see his sons playing together on the same team. He’s expressed disappointment in the past that Thiago decided to play for Spain over Brazil (Rafinha chose Brazil).
“You never know what twists exist in the world of football. The doors are always open, and who knows whether one day they’ll play together.”
For now, Thiago remains solidly a Bayern player and personally has not publicly expressed any desire to leave the club. At only 25 years of age, Thiago has many years remaining ahead of him. Bayern fans would like to see him play a full season without missing huge chunks through injury.
