The long wait finally appears to be over. Mario Götze is going back to Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern Munich has agreed to a €23M transfer fee while Götze and Dortmund have agreed to personal terms including an €8M salary. There are still final details to iron out as with any deal, with what is going to happen with the difference this season in Mario Götze’s salary. He was set to earn €12M this season at Bayern and the Dortmund drop in pay would see him lose out on €4M. I don’t really blame him for making the clubs hash out who is going to pay him the difference.
The official announcement is expected later this week, report multiple sources.
For Mario Götze this is an opportunity to reassert his quality as a player. After two pivotal years under Pep Guardiola, he languished last season with the arrivals of Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman and a new play style that focused on speed and wing play over intricate creative movement. This has been a move months in coming and despite interest from both Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur, Götze is going back to the banks of the Rhine.
UPDATE: Kicker reports the final transfer price is €26M because of course it has to change again otherwise it wouldn’t be a transfer saga
