For being one of the best national teams to ever grace a field, Germany have a glaring weakness hanging over their head: They can’t figure out a way to beat Italy when it counts the most.
Never before has Germany defeated Italy at a European Championship or a World Cup. However, Jogi Löw and his troops will be looking to put the past out of their mind when they play Italy in Bordeaux in Saturday’s quarterfinal.
This is unquestionably the biggest match to date at Euro 2016. Germany and Italy are two of the heavyweights of world football. Now, with the world watching, Manuel Neuer and Gianluigi Buffon will go “one on one” with a trip to the semifinals on the line.
The reigning World Champions have all of the talent in the world and should be the favorites to move past Italy. However, as Belgium’s loss to Wales showed, the games aren’t played on paper.
