According to ESPN's Mark Lovell, Xabi Alonso has been rushed off to the hospital with a suspected broken rib during Bayern Munich's match against FC Ingolstadt. Alonso immediately fell to the ground after an aerial duel with Australian Mathew Leckie at the end of the first half of the match against Ingolstadt. He was treated on the pitch by Bayern's physios and walked off under his own power.
Literally Breaking news @XabiAlonso off to hospital with suspected broken rib
— Mark Lovell (@LovellLowdown) May 7, 2016
If Alonso does indeed have a broken rib, it surely spells the end of his season. With only two matches remaining, including the DFB Pokal Final against Borussia Dortmund, Pep Guardiola would have to tweak his midfield configuration in Alonso's absence.
Arturo Vidal was left in Munich for the Ingolstadt match due to an infection.
Let's hope that his injury is not serious and we see our midfield maestro again soon.
UPDATE
Bayern Media Director Markus Hörwick has updated the media on Alonso's situation: It's just a rib contusion. It's possible he still plays in the DFB Pokal Final.
Entwarnung bei @XabiAlonso - Hörwick: "Stand jetzt nur eine Rippenprellung! Einsatz im Pokalfinale möglich." #FCIFCB #FCB
