Dortmund have confirmed that Mats Hummels had asked to return to his boyhood club Bayern Munich.
World Cup winner Mats Hummels has one year left on his contract, but has told the club he wants to join der Rekordmeister, a statement on the official BVB website has confirmed.
The 27-year-old Hummels had been a Bayern youth academy product since he was six years old, but left the club in 2008. After eight years with BVB, Hummels has evidently decided that he wants a new challenge.
The statement from Dortmund reads as follows: "Defender Mats Hummels has communicated his desire to leave the club in the summer and wants to join league rivals Bayern Munich for next season."
It goes on to clarify that point at which negotiations presently exist: "With Mats Hummels -- as at present with all other players from Borussia Dortmund -- no exit clause has been agreed, and the player is under contract to June 30, 2017."
Bayern Munich will play Borussia Dortmund in the 2016 DFB Pokal Final Saturday, May 21 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
