According to Sport Bild, Borussia Dortmund star center back and fan favorite Mats Hummels will join Bayern this summer. The reported transfer fee is around 30 million Euros, and he will receive a four year contract worth approximately €10 million a season with bonuses. Bayern Munich Media Director Markus Hörwick had only this to say:
"Mats Hummels is a Borussia Dortmund player and he has a contract until 2017. That must be respected."
Manager Pep Guardiola also did not comment on the potential transfer, merely stating "This is not a question for me". It is certainly understandable that both gentlemen would not want to openly comment on an impeding transfer from one of their biggest rivals in the midst of a Treble run, but much like the Mario Götze transfer saga, this seems like the worst kept secret in the DFB.
Hummels would bolster a defensive corps that has been racked with injuries and inconsistent play due to multiple players lining up at center back despite it not being their natural position. Should this transfer go through, Bayern could potentially be seeing a center back pairing that mirrors that of the German National Team with Hummels pairing with Jerome Boateng to form what could be a formidable back line.
The 27 year old Hummels had been a Bayern youth academy product since he was six years old. He married his longtime girlfriend Cathy Fischer, a former Miss FCB, is from Bavaria and the desire to go home might have been enough to sway him to rejoin the club he spent 13 years with.
