With a trip to Rio for this summer's Olympic Games on the line, Julian Green has join the United States U-23 side for a two-legged playoff against Colombia. Both countries finished just on the outside looking in from their respective continent's qualifying.
Since receiving a call-up and scoring for the Americans at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Green has found himself relegated to U-23 duty with the USA attempting to qualify for the Olympics. Being unable to find playing time last season while on loan at Hamburg and then being stuck in the Regionalliga doesn't generally grab headlines. However, Green has generally played well while on duty with the USA U-23 side.
It was never going to be easy for Green to break into Bayern's first eleven, and it got even harder when Bayern brought in Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman last summer. Recently, he was linked with AC Milan, but it's tough to say if that's a realistic move for him.
While he's still only twenty years old, Bayern may be in a situation this summer where they make a permanent decision on his future with the club. Two summers ago, Green was the next big thing in Munich. Now? Who knows.
The first match will take play on May 25 in Colombia, and the return leg will be on March 29 in the United States.
