Since Pep Guardiola joined Bayern Munich, the club has only lost to one team twice in league play. No, that team is not someone you would expect. It's not Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke, or Borussia Mönchengladbach. That team is fellow Bavarian club FC Augsburg.
Markus Weinzierl has won a match in Augsburg and in Munich against the record champions. Bayern know that no matter what they do, they're going to have their hands full. "Augsburg have always been an awkward opponent for us," captain Philipp Lahm said. "They are hard-working and are very disciplined in defence."
Some of the worst possible news hit Bayern on Saturday. When you learn that, once again, Holger Badstuber will miss significant time due to an injury, your heart just drops. It's impossible that the news won't impact the game that is played on Sunday, and it could go on of two directions. Bayern could rally behind Badstuber (once again) and put on a brilliant performance, or they could be demoralized and drop another result of Augsburg.
As for the question of who will play in center defense, Guardiola's options have become severely limited in recent weeks. Badstuber, Jerome Boateng, Medhi Benatia, and Javi Martinez are all out due to injuries at this time, and while Benatia is close to a return, he's not there yet. Joshua Kimmich will almost assuredly find himself at centerback, but who will join him?
Are we looking at some combination of Kimmich, David Alaba, Lahm, Rafinha, and Juan Bernat in defense? This would have to be the shortest backline in Bayern's history.
Once the lineups are released, this thread will be updated.
