Niklas Sule is one of the most exciting young players in the Bundesliga. He’s likely a future German national team centerback and a highly valued commodity that Bayern Munich are looking to add next summer. All of that still doesn’t mean Bayern are going to behave idiotically.
Bayern have made no secret of their interest in Sule between outright confirmation in their interest to coy statements alluding to their intent to buy. All of that changes though if the transfer fee becomes outrageous. Hoffenheim are reportedly looking for an offer of €25M for the 21-year-old but Bayern acknowledge they’re not going to get sucked into a bidding war for the player.
"There are still major problems, the transfer fee could greatly jeopardize the deal " said Uli Hoeneß. The main culprit here is the addition of Chelsea FC (among others) to the hunt who are reportedly set to exceed the fee Bayern is offering.
At a broader level, €25M should be the very top of the market for a centerback. €25M is near the price Bayern Munich paid for Medhi Benatia three seasons ago and is slightly less than the transfer fee they shelled out for Mats Hummels last summer. Both of those players arrived with pedigrees and performances that vastly outshine what Niklas Sule has accomplished at Hoffenheim in his career. Dropping that kind of financial outlay on a player with a limited track record of success and performance isn’t a solid investment.
And Bayern Munich aren’t in the habit of making bad investments.
