Last season when Bayern Munich signed Xabi Alonso to a contract extension, many assumed that it would be the last contract for the Spanish maestro at the Allianz Arena. However, that may not be the case, according to a new report.
Sport Bild is reporting that Bayern are currently working on a new contract to offer the 35 year old midfielder. The contract, for a one year extension, would see a reduction in pay and play for Alonso. It’s estimated that Alonso currently makes around €6.5 million.
While many Bayern fans are ready to move on from Alonso, it’s clear that the club values Alonso’s contributions on and off the field. He’ll turn 36 next season, so limiting his minutes will go a long way toward keeping him, and the team, moving forward.
Options do exist for Alonso, if he or Bayern decided against another year. Alonso’s skill set would allow him to slot right into most teams around the world and make that team better.
