Bayern Munich announced on Friday that the club will be playing in the 2017 Telekom Cup. The club will join Borussia Mönchengladbach, Fortuna Düsseldorf, and Mainz at the Esprit Arena in Düsseldorf for the mini-tournament.
However, instead of this being a summer tournament, the decision was made to move this tournament to January during the winter break. The games will be played on January 14, less than one week before Bayern resumes play in the Bundesliga.
The matches will be played a one 45 minute period, going straight to penalties if the score is tied. Bayern will start against Düsseldorf with the winner and loser playing their counterparts in the Mainz and Gladbach match. All four matches will be played back-to-back-to-back-to-back.
Bayern have won the tournament twice, tied with Hamburg. They’ve played in every edition of the tournament to date. This will be the first Telekom Cup that Hamburg will not be a part of.
