David Alaba has been called up by Austria for upcoming qualifiers for World Cup 2018. Austria will play Wales on October 6 in Vienna and Serbia on October 9 in Belgrade. The road to Russia is underway.
The Austrians are looking to rebound from a rather poor performance at Euro 2016 in France where they finished at the bottom of their group. In a group where they were expected to at least advance to the knockout rounds, Austria managed one measly point.
For the start of this season under new manager Carlo Ancelotti, Alaba still has yet to round into the form everyone knows that he’s capable of. One could argue that Alaba has struggled throughout the majority of early 2016 under Pep Guardiola .
Alaba is joined in the Austria squad by former Bayern midfielder Alessandro Schöpf who now plies his trade with Schalke 04. Schöpf played exclusively with the Bayern reserves before leaving for Nürnberg.
