In the spring of 2008, SV Darmstadt was in a lot of trouble. After being a yo-yo between the third and fourth division for a number of years, the debts had built up. With €1.1 million face the club, Darmstadt entered insolvency proceedings.

Former club administrators, players, and supporters donated money to help keep the club afloat. In addition to those actions, Bayern Munich organized a friendly with Darmstadt, where the Hessian club would keep all proceeds. Seven years later, SV Darmstadt are playing in the Bundesliga.

As Darmstadt head coach Dirk Schuster sat down at the prematch press conference on Friday, he made sure he pointed this out to the present media. "We should not forget that without the benefit match with Bayern, this match would not place on Saturday."

Saturday's match between the two clubs is the first time they've played a competitive match against each other since the 1981-82 Bundesliga season. FC Bayern won both matches en route to the championship.
